Training, and Skills
ALI’s staff are the most important part of the professional service we provide. Staff are chosen for their interest and subsequent skills
in the outdoors, as well as their love of working with people, particularly youth.
Careful selection and continuous training ensures that each program can meet its aims safely and effectively. ALI staff are certified or equally experienced in the activity they are running on program. Staff are chosen according to guidelines as set out by the following government and industry bodies:
- NSW Department of Education and Training
- NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services
- ACT Department of Education and Training
- ACT Department of Environment and Heritage
- The Adventure Activities Standards
- Relevant peak industry bodies such as Australian Canoeing, the Professional Association of Climbing Instructors (PACI) and the Australian Professional Snowsport Instructors (APSI)

Managing Director and Owner
Andrew started ALI in 1994 with a vision to provide an opportunity to challenge young people to grow through experiences in the Snowy Mountains in both summer and winter. He has built the company over the last 21 years to be one of the leading outdoor education providers for schools in Australia. Andrew has a passion for skiing , mountain biking and travel and enjoys living in Jindabyne.
Nathan first worked with ALI in the winter season of 2003 as an ‘on snow’ program co-ordinator and has been involved in a number of programs in summer and winter over the past 10 years. Nathan loves going for a ski, riding a mountain bike or going for a canyon up in the Blue Mountains. He also loves to go camping with his two little girls!
Senior Guide / Equipment Manager
Higgsy has been leading and guiding groups in Vic and NSW for over 10 years and has certifications including Advanced Certificate and Cert II in Sport & Recreation, Industry Instructor/Guiding Certificates in skiing, swift water rescue, raft/canoe/kayak guide, climbing and ropes courses, bushwalking and cycling. His favorite outdoor pursuits include telemarking, heading to the back country and mountain biking.
Bec joined the ALI team in Feb 2005 for 6 weeks work as a guide. She decided she loved Jindabyne, so she made it her home and has been working with ALI ever since. After several years working in the field as a guide, she began working in the Admin & Finance areas of the business and is currently in the role as our Finance Manager. Bec loves to be outside camping, hiking, white water kayaking and skiing backcountry in winter.
Sales & Marketing Manager
Miff has been with ALI since 2009,originally based in the Jindabyne office, has since returned to Sydney and is enjoying the close proximity to new and existing schools and groups. She looks after all winter bookings, new summer and winter enquiries, and is happy to visit schools to chat about programs we offer. Miff makes regular visits to the Jindabyne office, especially during winter, getting on snow as often as possible!
Bungarra Site Manager
Leigh has worked as a chef for over 15 years all around Australia. Before moving to Jindabyne in 2012 Leigh ran one of North East Victoria’s most successful motels for 5 years. Completing a Diploma of Hospitality in 2011, Leigh has relished taking on the responsibility of running Bungarra Alpine Centre. His favourite outdoor pursuits include fishing, biking and skiing.

Senior Guide & White Water Assessor
A career change from carpentry into the Outdoor Education field , 14 years ago, has equipped Stu with extensive skills and knowledge across the broad range of activities available with an ALI program . Stu’s passion for white water paddling has extended his versatility within ALI , now running courses for anyone interested in white water guiding , instructing and rescue techniques. When not in the back country or on the lower snowy river, he’s busy developing programs for corporate groups to get out of the office and enjoy the thrill of white water.
Paddy has been working as an outdoor guide for over 10 years, spending several year as a canyon guide in the Blue Mountains and freelancing. Starting as a casual guide with ALI he has since become full time and shares his passion for the snowy mountains with groups, across the range of activities available . His favourite outdoor pursuits include canyoning, rock-climbing, back country skiing & kayaking and all general larrikin activities.
Mountain Bike Guide & Assistant Hike and Campsite Guide
Emrys has been working with ALI since 2007 and during the last few winter seasons has been working with Disabled Winter Sports Australia to assist participants in their snow experience. Emrys loves being outdoors and doing anything active, especially wakeboarding, skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, rock climbing and riding her dirt bike – she’s a pretty busy girl!!!
Casual Summer Guide
Rex spent 24 years teaching Science and OE at several large private Schools in Sydney before joining ALI in 2011. His qualifications in outdoor pursuits and experience hiking and skiing across the globe make him a great asset to the team. He’s always happy to share stories of his adventures, ranging from the arctic circle in Sweden , hiking in Europe, skiing wherever there is snow to surfing & kayaking adventures here and abroad.
Bike Guide Extraordinaire & Occasional Hike Guide
Vanessa has over 10 years experience as a Mountain Bike Guide and work in the outdoor retail industry. Her favourite outdoor pursuits include mountain biking & LOTS of skiing!!!
Outdoor Activity Guide
Sarah has developed a passion for mountain biking since moving to the mountains 10 years ago. She enjoys sharing her skills and knowledge with those new to riding with her patient and caring nature .Her love of the outdoors is infectious and during summer you will find her riding the local trails and in winter snowboarding and skate skiing!
Summer Operations Manager
We first met Andy as head of School Group Ski Lessons at Thredbo. We have worked closely with him through the ALI/Thredbo winter partnership for many years. We are proud to be offering Andy a Cert IV Outdoor Education traineeship and having his involvement in our summer programs.
Rosalie spent 10 years working in administrative roles for various Government departments in Canberra, before chasing the peace and serenity of the mountains and moving her family to Jindabyne. She has spent the last three years working for Thredbo and is now taking over the general administration of the office at ALI. Rosalie loves being out in the mountains, both summer and winter and is enjoying teaching her children a new, more active way of life.!
After working for ALI in the field, Allison has moved into the office as our Program Administrator. Alison coordinates the administrative processes for programs , prior to arrival . She is a qualified ski instructor and with husband Andy ( also with ALI) she loves climbing hills on her bike, playing golf and any spare time in winter on the slopes at Thredbo.
Outdoor Activity Guide
Commencing with ALI in 2007 , Jason brought with him extensive skills and knowledge in the field of Outdoor Education, putting practise to theory as an OE Teacher. As a year round guide , he is instrumental in supporting students as they engage in a range of summer and winter activities. In addition to guiding Jason was awarded the 2014 Australian Geographic Adventurer of the Year, circumnavigating Australia, including Tasmania, in a solo kayak. An achievement he takes in his stride and a story well worth listing to when on program
